Question Convert ext4 FS to ext3 without formatting HDD

Hello everyone,

Can anyone tell me how can I convert ext4 filesystem to older one, ext3 or ext2 maybe?

I just am facing little problems with my machine because of this new FS as some programs are not running properly.

So...

Thanks in advance.

Hya,

I think that ext4 volume can be mounted as ext3.

Happy Penguins!

Convert ext4 to ext3 without formatting HDD

Morning,
the problem is that files created on an ext4 filesystem using extents. Extents are not supported by ext3. If you mount an ext4 as an ext3 filesystem, all already created files are still using extents.
To solve this, each file has to be recreated (e.g. by copying).
You can find more detailed discussions e.g. here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1040029
or here:
http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/16837/

If you are talking about the "root" or "boot" filesystems, I suggest to use fsarchiver to create an archive and to restore the archive with the mkfs=ext3 option.
Take a look at the quickstart guide.

Regards
Frank

Interesting Frank - might have to look into that.
