Illinois Governor Pat Quinn refuses to enforce immigration laws

When Governor Janet Brewer signed SB 1070 into law to protect Arizona from being overrun by illegal aliens, President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder immediately sided with Mexico and illegal aliens by bring a suit against the law. Arizona suffers nearly 500,000 illegal aliens living, working and roaming around that state. 

In Illinois, where corruption has become a way of life and Chicago houses an estimated 2.1 million illegal aliens, Governor Pat Quinn refuses to enforce immigration laws of any kind. 

Dan Stein, director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, www.FAIRus.org , obtained a letter from Quinn that was sent to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn advised ICE he is immediately terminating the Secure Communities agreement that exists between the Illinois State Police (ISP) and the Department of Homeland Security.  The letter is emphatic, “ISP will play no role in Secure Communities, either actively or as a pass-through for information.”  The governor also mentions that no new counties in his state will participate.  

“This act of defiance by a governor refusing to participate in a mandatory federal immigration enforcement program presents a range of problems for the Obama Administration, a possible domino effect by other illegal alien sanctuary states, and jeopardizes one of the few remaining immigration enforcement programs,” said Stein. “Under Secure Communities, once a person is arrested for anything from a traffic violation to a murder, local police take their fingerprints, send them to state police and then to the FBI for criminal background checks.  ICE is then able to access the information. If the prints match that of someone known to be in the country illegally, ICE can order the immigrant detained as a first step toward deportation.

“Every jurisdiction across the nation is expected to be using Secure Communities by 2013 and it’s currently used by 1253 jurisdictions counties in 42 states. The program helps local communities identify the immigration status of those already in lockup and makes sure illegal aliens are removed from the country after serving time, and not put back on the street. 

“With Illinois now refusing to participate, the Obama administration faces the dilemma of suing a state for not complying with federal immigration laws even as they recently sued Arizona for trying to enforce those same laws.

“Where immigration is concerned, the federal government fundamentally sets the policy. Just as states can’t on their own have a 10-70 (Arizona type law) this is kind of a flip side of that – nor can they exclude themselves from an enforcement tool we’re using.”

Congressman Wants to Hit Sanctuary Cities Where it Hurts: The Wallet

“This week Congressman Lou Barletta (R-Pa.) plans to introduce legislation that would impose financial penalties on cities that refuse to enforce federal immigration laws.  The yet to be named bill is designed to strip sanctuary cities of all federal funding,” said Stein. “Sanctuary cities choose to look the other way on illegal immigration. They prohibit city employees – such as law enforcement officers – from inquiring about immigration status or reporting illegal aliens to the federal government. And despite becoming safe havens for illegal aliens, these cities continue to receive federal funding for law enforcement, education, and other public services.  Barletta argues, “Local elected officials who choose to ignore enforcement of federal immigration policy are aiding and assisting illegal aliens. They should not receive millions or even billions in tax dollars as a reward.”

“Some of the country’s largest cities are also sanctuary cities, including those with huge violent crime problems.  New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, DC, all adopt “don’t ask, don’t tell” policies for illegal aliens.  Other cities with similar policies are Minneapolis, San Diego, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and Houston.

“Until recently, the Congressional Research Service maintained a comprehensive list of sanctuary cities.  However, some jurisdictions objected to their policies being identified – fearing a backlash from residents or the federal government itself – and the list ceased to exist.  Rep. Barletta’s bill will once again cast attention on the law-breakers.”

Obama Takes His Amnesty Push to Texas

“President Obama will travel to El Paso, Texas on Tuesday, finally bringing his amnesty campaign beyond the walls of the White House,” said Stein. “In the past month the President has met with big business leaders, Hispanic actors, and amnesty advocate groups to develop a strategy to win Latino voters by promoting comprehensive amnesty. 

“While both Democrats and Republicans acknowledge that the prospects for comprehensive amnesty are slim, the DREAM Act remains a possibility despite failing in December’s lame duck session.  FAIR will continue to update you on any developments.”
